Woman Charged with Petty Theft after Stealing Coins from a Fountain

A woman was charged with Petty Theft after stealing coins from a fountain.

A woman in Ohio has been charged with petty theft after stealing coins from a public fountain. According to reports, the woman took $2.87 out of the fountain in order to buy groceries. When police questioned her, she said she took it because the money didn’t belong to anybody. Even the theft of a small amount can result in criminal charges in Morgan, Logan, and Weld County. Let’s take a look at the law in Colorado:

What is Petty Theft in Greeley, Evans, and Erie?

A person will be charged with petty theft if they take items which aren’t theirs which are worth less than $50. They will be charged with a class 1 petty offense which carries a sentence of up to 6 months in the Weld County jail, and up to a $500 fine. Many people don’t take small charges seriously, and simply plead guilty. But, once you have petty offense conviction on your record, you will have to go through the process to seal it in the future. Only recently did Colorado allow petty offense convictions to be sealed. Even now, you are required to wait 3 years after your conviction to seal your record.

Why Should I Care about a Petty Theft Conviction?

Even convictions for small offenses are detrimental. When an employer does a background check, they will see your arrest and conviction record. This can make it difficult to get a job or find housing. Living in constant fear of someone finding out about your past is not a good way to live. This is why we always encourage people to fight charges against them, even if it is something small such as petty theft.

A Good Ending for the Woman Who Stole from the Fountain

The woman who stole coins from the fountain was unemployed and was about to lose her apartment. When questioned by the police, she said she was going to buy food with the money she took. Regardless of her plight, she was charged with petty theft. The government doesn’t always look at both sides of the story. Thankfully, a Good Samaritan heard about her, and began an online donation for her benefit. He realized she needed mercy and help instead of a summons for a court appearance. Due to his actions, over $2,000 has been raised to help the woman.
