The One Hundred Days of Heat campaign has finally come to an end across the highways and interstates running through Weld County. The 100 days of Heat Campaign runs annually across Colorado from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day weekend. Reports show that the Weld County Sheriff’s Office and police officers across Greeley, Eaton, Keenesburg, Hudson, and other Colorado cities arrested about 1,440 people for DUIs (Driving Under the Influence). A grand total of almost 26,000 people were arrested during the entirety of last year. This year has given police forces increased “success” with arrests for DUI’s marking a 40 percent increase from last year. State Patrol, Sheriff’s Departments, and Police Officers have pulled over and arrested more than 2,000 people during the majority of the 100 Days of Heat Campaign, with one last big weekend before the unofficial end of summer. Police continued patrolling until 3am on Tuesday morning to ensure the maximum number of people drinking and driving over the three day weekend were apprehended.
Police determine whether or not a person may be charged with a DWAI or DUI by measuring their Blood Alcohol Content to see whether or not the person is above the legal limit of .05. Many factors play into the BAC of an individual, and vary from person to person depending on weight, type of alcohol consumed, and the amount of time it was consumed. The majority of people do not realize that two or three beers could spike them over the legal limit, even though they feel perfectly fine to drive.
On the legal side of things, a DUI is nothing to fool around with. .08 is the legal limit in which people must be under to avoid a DUI. If someone is pulled over and their Blood Alcohol Content (BAC) is under .08 but over .05, they will be charged with a DWAI (Driving While Ability Impaired). A DUI will cost you a large sum for costs, fines, court costs, classes, and probation. Cab or hotel costs are ridiculously low by comparison.
Police do not take DUI’s lightly. They prosecute them heavily and, even if nothing happens and you are able to handle a car safely, the cost of a DUI charge is high.
