State of Colorado criminal cases in the Weld County Courthouse can be misdemeanor or felony offenses. But, did you know that there are city courts in nearly every Colorado city? They are called Municipal Courts – such as the Windsor Municipal Court and the Greeley Municipal Court. These Municipal Courts handle tickets for city law, or Municipal Code violations. City courts only handle misdemeanor and traffic cases. Below, our defense attorneys will discuss the municipal courts located in the cities of Weld County. Our four topics will are:
1. Where is the Greeley Municipal Court located, and What Crimes do They Handle?
2. How do I Know Which Courthouse I Should Go to for My Case? |
#1. Where is the Greeley Municipal Court located, and What Crimes do They Handle?
The Greeley Municipal Court is located at 1122 11th Ave, Greeley, CO 80631, and their phone number is (970) 350-9230. This city court is supported by the Greeley Police, filing charges under the Municipal Code of the City of Greeley. Only misdemeanor, petty and traffic (not including DUI or DWAI) cases are heard by judges of this court. City Attorneys are the prosecutors in the Greeley Municipal Court.
It is important to know that felony cases are heard either in the Weld County Courthouse, which houses District Court (for felonies and big civil cases) and County Court (for misdemeanor and small civil cases). Weld County houses the Nineteenth Judicial District of courts for the state of Colorado. No municipal cases are handled here.
#2 How do I Know Which Courthouse I Should Go to for My Case?
To know where to go to court in Greeley and Weld County, you must know if you are accused of violating a state law or a Greeley City Code law. For instance, if you were headed to court for a Felony Menacing charge, you would go to the Weld County Courthouse. But, if you had to appear in court for a Speeding Ticket in Greeley, you would most likely appear in the Greeley Municipal Court. Your summons / ticket will usually tell you which courthouse to appear in.
If you received a traffic ticket in the Greeley City limits, you will most likely go to the Greeley Municipal Court for minor offenses, and to the Weld County Courthouse for more serious traffic cases like DUI, DWAI, Driving Under Revocation or Reckless Driving. If you get a ticket from a Weld County Sheriff, it will most always be for a state offense, since they don’t normally give tickets inside the Greeley City Limits.
Most cities have their own police department, who will write minor traffic tickets and less serious crimes into the Municipal Courts of those cities. Eaton Police officers will patrol inside the city limits of Eaton. This is true for other municipalities in Weld County, such as Windsor, Ault, Pierce, Platteville, Erie, Severance, or Fredrick, Colorado. However, the Weld County Sheriff’s Office patrols outside the city limits in unincorporated areas of the county. You can find your city’s Municipal Code here:
#3. What are Common Crimes Prosecuted in Municipal Courts?
Some common criminal offenses that our attorneys defend against in the city Municipal Courts across Weld County include:
- Disorderly Conduct
- Battery and Assault

If the criminal charge is being prosecuted in Weld County Court, then the District Attorney or D.A. for Weld County will prosecute. However, if the offense is being handled in a Municipal Court, then a local City Attorney will be taking on the case. It is important to have an experienced attorney who knows both the Weld County Courthouse, the D.A.s, and the local municipalities of our county when you are faced with a criminal charge. A criminal conviction and jail time can have lasting repercussions on your person and professional life, even if the sentence does not seem harsh.
