Sex Offender Treatment in Greeley and Weld County
The Colorado legislature has given authority to the Sex Offender Management Board (SOMB) to make the rules for the standardized Sex Offender treatment under C.R.S. 16-11.7-106. The SOMB decides how Sex Offenders will be evaluated, identified, treated, managed and monitored – basically running every aspect of their lives. Originally, the SOMB was put in place to protect the community from serious sexual predators, but these strict standards are now being applied to anyone involved in minor cases, like public nudity.
What is the SOMB?
The Sex Offender Management Board is a group of 25 people who decide how Sex Offenders should be managed. This is a statewide board, so it doesn’t matter if you are charged in Weld, Morgan or Logan County, your treatment and standards will be the same.
What Does Sex Offender Treatment Entail?
Sex Offender Treatment is the most intensive treatment you can experience. There are a number of people involved who have a say over every aspect of your life. You will be under your treatment provider or therapist, your parole or probation officer (sometimes both depending on your sentence) as well as a polygraph examiner. You will be required to meet with your probation or parole officer regularly, attend weekly group treatment sessions, schedule individual therapy meetings, and pass arranged polygraphs. Nothing is off limits to your treatment team and you are required to disclose any and all personal information they feel is vital to treating you in Evans and Windsor.
It is a mandatory part of supervision for the Sex Offender to have no contact with anyone under the age of 18, even their own children. This is a blanket rule applied to all Sex Offenders, even if their crime had nothing to do with children. People may be forced to leave their jobs because the risk of children being present is too high. Or, they may have to quit because alcohol is served there, violating another rule for all Sex Offenders across the board that they have no alcohol. This is again regardless of whether your crime involved alcohol or not.
Why a One – Size – Fits – All Sex Offender Treatment Program?
The plain and simple answer is fear. Judges, prosecutors, parole and probation officers are worried about being blamed if you reoffend in a more serious way. The SOMB has made it clear that Sex Offenders cannot be “cured,” and therefore anyone who commits any type of sex offense needs to be closely watched and not given any opportunities to commit another sex offense, because, according to the SOMB, that is their nature. While statistics show that the recidivism (reoffending) rate for sex offenders is one of the lowest of all crimes, the fear is too overwhelming and risky to for the government to take that into consideration. No one wants to lose their job.
